STEPPENWOLF FOR YOUNG ADULTS
1984 - Fall 2015
How does SYA’s production of 1984, embody and explore the manipulation of (Winston’s) memory by Big Brother in order to question how ‘memory defines who we are’?
Students connected a personal memory to one of Winston's memories in the PRE. After students watched 1984, they embodied the role of BIG BROTHER by manipulating the memories of one of their classmates in the POST.
Speak Up! brings brings current events into the classroom by facilitating a process where students devise an original performance on topical issues.
Students focused on stereotypes. To end their performance, students faced their stereotypes and spoke their truth with this statement: "Just because I'm ___ doesn't mean I'm _____. My name is _____ and I'm ______." It was an incredibly powerful moment onstage and received a huge applause and support from their peers.
